Mr. Herd’s practice is primarily focused on business transactions representing both individuals and businesses in connection with their day-to-day operations and legal needs. He also assists in their acquisitions, sales, financing, and leasing needs of commercial, industrial, multiple-family, agricultural, and residential real estate. His agricultural real estate experience encompasses the oil and gas industry advising and representing owners, investors, developers, operators, and suppliers to the industry. His experience in this area resulted in him being appointed to serve on the Federal Court Commission for a case involving a large gas storage field condemnation proceeding in 2015.
His business transaction practice includes a main focus on the aircraft industry. With more than 25 years of experience in the aviation field, Mike devotes a substantial portion of his practice to aviation transactional matters. He represents local, national, and international clients in connection with the purchase, sale, leasing, and financing of large and mid-size business jet aircraft and helicopters under Part 91 operations. Many of Mike’s aviation clients are international. He advises and assists them on purchase and sale transactions while guiding the parties to the appropriate business structures for compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations. In addition to buyers and sellers of aircraft, he advises and represents aviation brokers, dealers, management companies, lenders, and fixed-based operators. Although most of his international clients seek FAA registrations, he has been engaged in many cross-border transactions with the registration of aircraft in foreign jurisdictions. He is also a member of NBAA.
Mike is a lifelong Kansas resident and fourth-generation attorney originating from Coldwater. He is the great-grandson of Dick H. Rich (admitted 1903); grandson of Horace H. Rich (admitted 1921); and son of former Kansas Supreme Court Justice and former Kansas State Senator Harold S. Herd (admitted 1946). Mike has embraced their legacy in devoting his career toward the advancement of his profession and serving the community while delivering high-quality legal services to his clients.
