At Hinkle, we look for summer associates that are passionate about experiencing the ins and outs of a career as an attorney.
Each summer associate is paired with two mentors (1 partner and 1 associate) who provide personalized guidance throughout the summer. The mentors are assigned based on the summer associate’s area of interest and help them not only with their projects but with the general practice of law.
TYPICAL SUMMER SCHEDULE
A Hinkle summer is a summer like no other. During the 12 week program, the summer schedule is filled with events allowing you to meet fellow attorneys, clients and staff of the Firm. The Firm’s “Lawyer’s League” softball team, attorney lunches and firm events throughout the summer are just a few ways summer associates get an opportunity to learn about both the Firm and Wichita.
Summer associates are typically assigned work from a number of different practice areas, both to broaden the summer associate’s experience and to allow the summer associate to meet and interact with as many of the Firm’s attorneys as possible. Most summer associates will have the opportunity to work on projects from each practice area in the Firm to give them a greater experience as they decide on a particular area of focus. When possible, summer associates accompany our attorneys on a wide variety of out-of-office experiences, including trials, hearings, depositions, witness interviews, settlement conferences, closings, client meetings, and seminar presentations.
FORMAL WRITING PROGRAM
To provide real world guidance and feedback, Hinkle summer associates participate in a formal writing program. Each associate chooses a piece of their work and submits it at the half-way point and at the end of the program for review and feedback. The process helps associates sharpen and strengthen the skills that will be valuable as their careers progress.
As a summer associate, the Firm expects that participants be active and willing to learn all they can. From time to time the summer associate will be asked to provide feedback to help us strengthen the program for future participants
REVIEWS AND OFFERS
At the end of the summer program, each summer associate receives a final review to evaluate his or her performance. The final review establishes a benchmark for offer decisions which are made by the Recruiting and Executive Committees and are presented upon completion of the entire summer program.
“Everyone I have worked with so far has been very helpful and encouraging. Not just concerning projects that I am working on, but with advice generally about practicing law.”
